Barre Chords:   Sixth String Root
By using your index finger as a barre to hold down all six strings, you can play a barre chord that can be moved anywhere on the guitar neck.  The sixth string of the fret you barre will determine which chord you are playing.
Using this one fingering shown above, you can play all 12 major chords (A, A#, B, C, C#, D,D#, E, F,F#, G, G#)
